When The Plant Decides To Die

Look at this:

Can someone tell me the name of this plant?

I woke up and found this plant on the brink of death. I have no idea WHY is it dying? I never fail to water it everyday. I kept it under the shade. I talk to the plant every evening.

Where did I go wrong? Sheesh. I’m suspecting that the flower shops are selling us no quality soil. We see lovely plants on display, all healthy, fine looking plants. Kinda makes you feel envy of their so-called green fingers. Well let me tell you – as an experienced “i-buy-my-flowers-from-the-flower-nursery” – the plants on sale are of CHEAP, NO QUALITY SOIL!

Bah!! This is like the I-don’t-know-how-many-times I’ve bought plants from the nursery and almost ALL of those plants ended up DYING in less than a week. 2 weeks the most. Yiiiiii~~~ such a waste of money and time (and WATER!) Maybe next time I’ll just beg from the housewives or neighbours for their plants. *teehee*

Hey, my dying plants doesn’t mean I do not have GREEN FINGERS, ok? I have proof.

See?? See?? It’s GREEN and ALIVE. And the flower is budding too! Whoopieee!!
Oh by the way, can someone tell me the name of this plant too? :shy:

So why most of my plants are dying? Well, don’t look at me. I did everything a “plant owner” should do. Blame the nurseries. :P

Maybe it’s hanging in the draft? Too much sun?
    Or the pot too little?

    Wow,,, that’s indeed a green one…

That plant doesn’t need to be watered everyday (according to my mom who also has lots of that). Maybe that’s why urs died?

I don’t know the plant but I have the same problem. I think it’s because I don’t water them enough and then when they need new pots and dirt, I’m too lazy to change them…

Too much water might be the problem… soil content (too much clay maybe? the roots will drown and rot)… or you’ve washed out too many nutrients? Some plants need plant food, nutrients that have to be added to their “diet” either through pellets, soil mix, or misting.

You keep it in the shade.. does it get enough sunlight?

Yours looks like a fern, and I’m not really good with ferns (‘cept maybe Maiden’s Fair)… but I do know that to keep mine alive, I didnt just have to water the soil/roots, needed to spray them with a mister… just a fine spray over the leaves.

End of the day, I find the best way to have nice plants is to get plants from people who grow them… then you can always check with those people for tips on how to make ‘em flourish.

Ahhhh Rum, you’re a lifesaver! :P But thing is, my plant’s soil is made of er… I don’t know, it doesn’t look like soil to me. More like a mixture of coconut husks and some weird looking stuff… could that be the problem? Hmmm..

I’ll see how it goes. Thanks again for the advise. Hey, you’re running a nursery or something? Coz you sound an expert with plants. ;)

Well, coconut husks help keep soil porous if its heavy in clay, helps retain water if the soil is too sandy, decays into the soil slowly… so its pretty much all purpose.

There is the possibility that inefficient drainage will work together with the husks capacity for water retention to drown the roots, which will rot and lead to the death of your plant. This is easy to check (see if theres too much moisture in the soil) and fix.

However in and of itself, it doesn’t, at least as far as I know, have much nutrient value for the plants.

I tend to use coconut husks, charcoal and shards of broken pottery for orchids when I grow them in pots, but sometimes I just use the husk, tie a young orchid to it and it’ll grow in-situ.

However, this means I have to “feed” my plants separately… the husks don’t have enough nutrients. So I add fertilizer.

I’m not sure what type of plant you have since I can’t make out the details, but if its a

Terrestrial: pure compost would be fine or chemical fertilizers.

Lithophyte: You’ll need liquid plant food, or slow release capsules.

Epiphyte : I’d suggest either liquid plant food, fertilizer capsules, or vegetative compost…

I get good results from the mash that remains after you juice fruits or veggies. Its mashed enough to decompose fast, nutritious enough to sustain most plants (enough to flower!) and doesn’t smell bad (though can attract sand flies sometimes).

Another thing you might want to consider is pruning your plant… perhaps severely. Theres always the drawback that the shock of pruning might do the plant harm. However, its also possible that the leaves are dieing because there nothing for them to photosynthesize. Trimming away excess leaves will make the plant better able to survive on the amount of soil it has.

I’m flattered you think I know a lot about plant, but the truth is I’m not a professional, in fact I’m very much an amateur so I could be wrong!

Its just that whenever I got a plant (my neighbors are great about giving me shoots or seedlings) I’d see how they grew the parent plants.. and since I got 90% of my plants from friends, I could always go back to them and find out what I’m doing wrong :)
