There is the possibility that inefficient drainage will work together with the husks capacity for water retention to drown the roots, which will rot and lead to the death of your plant. This is easy to check (see if theres too much moisture in the soil) and fix.

However in and of itself, it doesn’t, at least as far as I know, have much nutrient value for the plants.

I tend to use coconut husks, charcoal and shards of broken pottery for orchids when I grow them in pots, but sometimes I just use the husk, tie a young orchid to it and it’ll grow in-situ.

However, this means I have to “feed” my plants separately… the husks don’t have enough nutrients. So I add fertilizer.

I’m not sure what type of plant you have since I can’t make out the details, but if its a

Terrestrial: pure compost would be fine or chemical fertilizers.

Lithophyte: You’ll need liquid plant food, or slow release capsules.

Epiphyte : I’d suggest either liquid plant food, fertilizer capsules, or vegetative compost…

I get good results from the mash that remains after you juice fruits or veggies. Its mashed enough to decompose fast, nutritious enough to sustain most plants (enough to flower!) and doesn’t smell bad (though can attract sand flies sometimes).

Another thing you might want to consider is pruning your plant… perhaps severely. Theres always the drawback that the shock of pruning might do the plant harm. However, its also possible that the leaves are dieing because there nothing for them to photosynthesize. Trimming away excess leaves will make the plant better able to survive on the amount of soil it has.

I’m flattered you think I know a lot about plant, but the truth is I’m not a professional, in fact I’m very much an amateur so I could be wrong!

Its just that whenever I got a plant (my neighbors are great about giving me shoots or seedlings) I’d see how they grew the parent plants.. and since I got 90% of my plants from friends, I could always go back to them and find out what I’m doing wrong

Yours looks like a fern, and I’m not really good with ferns (‘cept maybe Maiden’s Fair)… but I do know that to keep mine alive, I didnt just have to water the soil/roots, needed to spray them with a mister… just a fine spray over the leaves.

End of the day, I find the best way to have nice plants is to get plants from people who grow them… then you can always check with those people for tips on how to make ‘em flourish.
